St Marks win Knockout Cup

A wet, wild and windy windup to the 2008 season

Friday 10 am and as usual the impending rain that had held off in defiance of the weatherman’s predictions for three days, finally delivered itself in torrents. Again! However, by good grace, or the kindness of the ranger, sympathetic to our plight, the park was proclaimed ‘open’.

At three o’clock the pitch was deemed ‘playable’ by our similarly sympathetic refs and the go ahead was given. Game on. Phew!

Only the 4 teams, battling for the gold, silver and bronze, had dared to venture into the howling, drenching bluster at Queens Park, as the four pitted against each other in the losers’ half of the knockout comp thought better of their health than a rain soaked set to where leather strikes leather (more synthetic these days but what the hey), and stayed at home. (softies!)

So, only St Marks, GCA, Ability and a smattering of LETS players were up for it. A few of the keener APC’s were among the faithful also. After a quick roundup of availables to swell the scant LETS ranks to make a game of it, the games commenced, St Marks and LETS going all out for the cup and a semi friendly between Ability and GCA for the minor placings. To cut one long story short, the score between GCA and Ability was 4-4 to put them both on the dais for the bronze; and fair enough too I reckon, if not just for their brave efforts.

The main game of the day was a pearler’ - two, very evenly matched teams on paper playing some sublime football in the rain and blowin’ thunder. St Marks drew first blood but it was short lived; on a breakaway bursting through the sleeping St Marks’ defence LETS made it 1-1. After the half-time break it seemed LETS would take the lead as several attempts went begging but for desperate defending from the stalwart boys in red at the back and somewhere around the hour mark, there was a shift in gear from St Marks. The will to win, coupled with knowledge of each other’s game and respect for each other’s ability became an overwhelming force driven by team spirit. Daniel Croft, unusually in goal for his team that day, had a great game, but the movement and understanding of the St Marks front three left him in no man’s land and in no doubt that he was out of his league against this new found fire. With precision they sliced through the LETS defence and slotted home another two to finish the game 3-1 (Marcos Lopes getting two for the game and bringing his total for the season to 32 goals – top scorer for the 2008 competition).

And so, it was up the hill to the presentations and end of season celebrations, more liquid; though this the more welcomed kind.

First cup off the rank was the Refs Cup, won by the unassuming Rob Sypher. After 3 years of devoted service to ELSA, it looks almost certain that ‘Rob d’ Ref’ can’t make it down to the park in future on a Friday due to job commitments. A sad loss for the comp as Rob not only has an understanding for the rules of the game, but also a feel for what ELSA is about. You will be missed Robbo. However, I do believe his more than competent colleague in crime; Nathan will be doing the referee co-ordinating next season. Bring it on Nat!

Next came the ‘Most Improved Team’ award and… you guessed it, Ability, by a mile. Justin Lepani proudly held aloft the proof that those who don’t give up, can and will succeed. No doubt the 2009 season holds a bucket of wins for them if they can retain their indomitable spirit.

St Marks’ coach, captain, kit carrier and all round give everything a go-getter, Nick the Nolan took great pleasure in receiving the ABC Knockout Cup. “Silverware at last!” and surely nothing but praise for his fine team, after the way they had overcome the bleak conditions and a formidable opponent in LETS to win the trophy.

The rest of the presentation belonged to one team, GCA.

Each player was given a cup as a memento of their fabulous season together and Luis Bartholo won the ‘Most Valued Player’ award for his fighting spirit in midfield, setting the tone for the GCA style of play.

And.. the big one; the English Language Schools Association Perpetual Cup.

GCA were unbeaten in the league and must owe this to the way they keep their shape and cool on the park even when faced with stiff opposition. The organization off the field by their manager Nick Sharpe and on the field by Oliver Crouch is a lesson to other coaching squads in motivation and inspiration. The obvious personal respect and professional regard between all members of GCA shows that they are a team that plays as a team and believes its strength lies well beyond the sum of its parts.

And that was it. It was a good time had by all at the presentation party which was bigger and better than any before in the eleven year history of this competition. Great!

2008 Done and dusted

From the co-ordination side of the competition, I’d like to say that it has been a pleasure to have done it again with those of us who are old hands at the Friday arvo footy, and also working with the new blood of the comp this season, namely Mark Isaacs, (Aspect), Justin Lepani (Ability) Daniel Craft (LETS) and Peter Pippen (ACE). Welcome and enjoy it…. I do.

The website was and is a fantastic thing to happen to ELSA this season, and I must thank those responsible. From its outset, where Yuji Yamane, who championed LETS in the early part of the season, put the initial site together, to the partnership of Jean-Louis Carmagnole and Thomas Veverka, members of the GCA defensive line-up, who took Yuji’s programs and fashioned them into the website we have now. An electrifying result guys; one in which I and everyone who I have spoken to regarding the ELSA website, are so incredibly impressed by. Check it out. www.elsa.com.au

Mention must also go to ABC Australia for their sponsorship of the knockout cup. It’s ELSA’s first foray into sponsorship and as all of us concerned with the running of our competition know from having to get funds from harbour cruises and parties, any financial help from anywhere is so gratefully received. Thank you.

With regard to the season’s participants, we saw the new strength of the old battler SELC dominate throughout but sadly fall short in the final stages. Conversely, teams such as Aspect and Ability started disastrously but finished strongly, surprising most. ACE had a resurgence mid-season but failed to deliver come finals time and APC sadly never really got into gear at all. LETS gave us a taste of spice that peppered their season and St Marks had a couple of tough ones to rue yet gave their all and got some silver. But it was the sheer consistency of GCA that once again came through to show us that you can get it without too much fuss if you have a solid core of dedicated players to work with. All in all we all had fun though and joined together with our colleagues and friends in the spirit of football, which from my perspective is the essence of ELSA and what keeps us coming back year after year.

Good one!

St Marks win Knockout Cup

A wet, wild and windy windup to the 2008 season

Friday 10 am and as usual the impending rain that had held off in defiance of the weatherman's predictions for three days, finally delivered itself in torrents. Again! However, by good grace, or the kindness of the ranger, sympathetic to our plight, the park was proclaimed 'open'.

At three o'clock the pitch was deemed 'playable' by our similarly sympathetic refs and the go ahead was given. Game on. Phew!

Only the 4 teams, battling for the gold, silver and bronze, had dared to venture into the howling, drenching bluster at Queens Park, as the four pitted against each other in the losers' half of the knockout comp thought better of their health than a rain soaked set to where leather strikes leather (more synthetic these days but what the hey), and stayed at home. (softies!)

So, only St Marks, GCA, Ability and a smattering of LETS players were up for it. A few of the keener APC's were among the faithful also. After a quick roundup of availables to swell the scant LETS ranks to make a game of it, the games commenced, St Marks and LETS going all out for the cup and a semi friendly between Ability and GCA for the minor placings. To cut one long story short, the score between GCA and Ability was 4-4 to put them both on the dais for the bronze; and fair enough too I reckon, if not just for their brave efforts.

The main game of the day was a pearler' - two, very evenly matched teams on paper playing some sublime football in the rain and blowin' thunder. St Marks drew first blood but it was short lived; on a breakaway bursting through the sleeping St Marks' defence LETS made it 1-1. After the half-time break it seemed LETS would take the lead as several attempts went begging but for desperate defending from the stalwart boys in red at the back and somewhere around the hour mark, there was a shift in gear from St Marks. The will to win, coupled with knowledge of each other's game and respect for each other's ability became an overwhelming force driven by team spirit. Daniel Croft, unusually in goal for his team that day, had a great game, but the movement and understanding of the St Marks front three left him in no man's land and in no doubt that he was out of his league against this new found fire. With precision they sliced through the LETS defence and slotted home another two to finish the game 3-1 (Marcos Lopes getting two for the game and bringing his total for the season to 32 goals top scorer for the 2008 competition).

Everyone's a winner

And so, it was up the hill to the presentations and end of season celebrations, more liquid; though this the more welcomed kind.
